Have you taken our hair porosity quiz and/or self-evaluated your hair to determine that your hair is more low porosity, meaning your hair doesn't easily allow moisture to be absorbed into your hair shaft. Here are few, simple tips specific to this case that can help you obtain moisture and maintain healthy moisture levels.
REPEAT. Remember consistency with anything is where results are seen. These are simple steps that can help you stay consistent with a routine specific to your hair needs. Let us know what else you do for your low porosity hair that helps in the comments below. 👇🏾
*Not sure what PrePoo is? "Pre Pooing" is applying a treatment to your hair before the actual shampoo process. The treatment provides your hair with a protective layer. This is helpful because shampooing can strip moisture from the hair
Hi Renee,
1. Warm Water to Rinse the Conditioner:
Benefit: Warm water helps keep the hair cuticles open, allowing the deep conditioner’s nutrients to continue penetrating the hair shaft during the rinse. If you plan to apply additional products like leave-in sprays or creams right after rinsing, using warm water may help those products penetrate better into the hair strands.
Best Practice: If your goal is to follow up with styling products for maximum absorption, rinsing with warm water is a good idea.
2. Cold Water to Rinse the Conditioner:
Benefit: Cold water helps to close the hair cuticles, sealing in the moisture and nutrients from the deep conditioner. This can help enhance shine and smoothness, reduce frizz, and “lock in” the benefits of your conditioning treatment.
Best Practice: If you’re not immediately applying leave-in products or if your main concern is to lock in moisture and reduce frizz, finishing with cold water can help.
Suggested Routine:
Step 1: Rinse out the deep conditioner with warm water to ensure your hair remains hydrated and open to absorb more of the treatment’s benefits.
Step 2: Apply your leave-in spray or styling product while the cuticles are still slightly open.
Step 3: Finish with a cool rinse (optional) or cool air from your blow dryer to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture and products.
This approach gives you the best of both worlds—open cuticles for maximum product absorption and then sealing the hair shaft to lock in moisture and shine.
When rinsing the deep conditioner (after applying heat), what temp should the water be? Should we rinse with warm water to keep the cuticles open to allow styling products, such leave-in sprays, to penetrate better? Cold water to close cuticles and “trap” in the benefits from the deep conditioner?
Hey! When you say coconut oil, do you mean the liquid form?
Hi Pre Poo you can use alot of different options. Your hair usually will help you figure out which one works best for you. Coconut oil is defintiley a popular one. There are others you can use such as avocado or olive oil as well. Some prefer ones like aloe vera or butters or even a light conditioner to help you detangle before wash day. Keep in mind there are endless possibilities here. We suggest trying multiple ones and document how your wash day goes so you remember what worked the best. Hope this helps!
Wat kind of treatment to hair first before wash day..,Over night..??
“Pre Pooing is applying a treatment to your hair before the actual shampoo process.” What would be a good pre pooing treatment or product?
Can you tell me more about pre poo? I’ve done it the night before with a coconut oil or do you suggest something else?
